Vice-Captain Carragher

  • Squad No: 23
  • Position: Defender
  • Age: 33
  • Birth Date: Jan 28, 1978
  • Birth Place: Bootle
  • Height: 6'1" (1.85m)
  • Weight: 169 lbs (76.8 kg)
Carragher has become one of the leading defenders in the top flight after over a decade of service with Liverpool and England. He progressed through the youth ranks at Anfield, made his debut for his hometown club during the 1996-97 season and has not looked back since.

The defender has managed to fill all of the positions at the back over the years and has often been a victim of his versatility. Having shifted from left-back to right-back, the signing of Steve Finnan in the summer of 2003 placed real pressure on him, but the following year he was moved into the centre and enjoyed a new lease of life for his club where he marshalled the backline to incredible success in the 2005 Champions League.

Making his full England debut in 1999, he missed out on the 2002 World Cup through injury and was mainly used as backup player in both the 2004 Euros and the 2006 World Cup, but he was never able to take control of the centre-back spot for his country. Carragher called time on his England career during the brief reign of Steve McClaren, but performed a U-turn to play in the 2010 World Cup.

Strengths: Passionate beyond the call of duty, a committed tackler who has excellent positional sense and can slot in at right-back.

Weaknesses: Pace has never been a great attribute of his and he has been caught out aerially as well.

Career High: Coming back from 3-0 down at half-time to win the Champions League in 2005. Barely able to walk afterwards, he gave everything to the cause.

Career Low: Carragher opted to a coin back into the fans against Arsenal in 2002. He earned a red card and a disrepute charge from the FA.

Style: Passionate, heroic, committed, a born defender.

Quotes: "Carragher had to think about it because when we started he said 'no'. We tried to convince him four or five times because he is a leader on the pitch." Fabio Capello on Carragher's U-turn.

Trivia: Carragher has no navel due to having been born with gastroschisis.

The Goalkeeper

  • Full Name: Jose Reina
  • Squad No: 25
  • Position: Goalkeeper
  • Age: 28
  • Birth Date: Aug 31, 1982
  • Birth Place: Madrid, Spain
  • Height: 6' 1'' (1.85m)
  • Weight: 85 kg
'Pepe' may be the best goalkeeper in the Premier League and a Liverpool icon, but for Spain he is unfortunate enough to play in the same era as Iker Casillas, Vicente del Bosque's established No.1 and arguably the greatest goalkeeper of his age group on the planet.

After announcing himself as a goalkeeper of some repute in Spain thanks to spells at Barcelona - where he made his debut aged 18 and played against Liverpool in the UEFA Cup semi-final in 2001 - and Villarreal, Reina was recruited by Rafa Benitez in July 2005 and immediately displaced Jerzy Dudek, who had been Liverpool's penalty hero in Istanbul two months earlier, on his way to becoming a firm favourite of the Anfield crowd.

Reina quickly picked up an uncanny habit of breaking club records. In December 2005 he set a new club benchmark of 11 successive clean sheets and his 28th clean sheet in his first 50 games surpassed the tally of Liverpool legend Ray Clemence. Reina also won the Premier League Golden Glove award for the most clean sheets for three years in succession and has boasts an impressive penalties to saves ratio - most notably in the FA Cup final of 2006 and the Champions League semi-final win over Chelsea in 2007.

Strengths: Reina is the very model of a modern goalkeeper blessed as he is with impressive agility and lightning reactions. He also boasts excellent distribution and has started many a successful Liverpool counter-attack, as well as proving one of the best penalty-stoppers in the world game.

Weaknesses: Like any goalkeeper, Reina is subject to the odd gaffe and has struggled to command his defence when dealing with set pieces on occasions.

Career high: Saving three out of West Ham's four spot-kicks at the 2006 FA Cup final to atone for an unconvincing display in normal time as Liverpool won the trophy.

Career low: Failing to play any part at the 2006 World Cup despite travelling to Germany as a member of Luis Aragones' squad.

Style: Commanding, quick-thinking, alert, a dynamic shot-stopper.

Quotes: "A goalkeeper can win you the title definitely. He showed he is a very good keeper, the best in the Premier League for me. He is the No.1." Rafa Benitez, August 2009.

Trivia: Reina's father, Miguel , was a noted goalkeeper for both Barcelona and Atletico Madrid in the 1960s and 70s and the Liverpool man became only the third player to follow in his father's footsteps by playing in a European Cup final in 2007. Paolo Maldini and Manuel Sanchis had achieved the feat before him.

Career high: Winning the treble of league title, Portuguese Cup and Super Cup with FC Porto in 2006.

Career low: Signing for his hometown club FC Porto in 2004, he was used in an unfamiliar left-back role and must have wondered if he would ever make the breakthrough.

History of The Reds

Liverpool Football Club was formed in 1892 and is rightfully classed as the most successful British club at club level. However our beginnings are a direct result of Everton. Following some rule changes in 1882 Everton were forced to find some enclosed grounds to play and met with John Houlding in the Sandon. A ground was to be positioned off priory Road which was there home until they were forced to leave. In 1884 John Orrel agreed to let Houlding have a pitch at Anfield Road and the first ever game at Anfield saw a home win. Houlding poured money into the cause but after a few years became a harder owner to be with. Eventually Orrel and Houlding move further towards a severe rift and eventually when a plan to buy the ground by Houlding failed, Orrel evicted the club. After a further meeting a breakawy part of the club split from Anfield to form their own team, leaving Anfield empty in the hands of Orrel and Houlding. However those left at the club with Houlding decided the only thing to do with an empty football ground was form a team to play there and in May 1892 Liverpool Association Football Club was formed.

The club began in the Lancashire Association League with John McKenna in charge of the team. McKenna had been one of the men who stayed and sided with Houlding in the split. Liverpool’s first game came on September 1st 1892 against Rotherham and Liverpool won 7-1. This first team saw the eleven players all arriving following a trip north of the border by McKenna who has scottish connections in Glasgow. One year on from formation McKenna again applied for election to the Football league and this time was accepted. Their first game at Anfield in the league saw them dispose of Lincoln 4-0 In fact Liverpool went through the season unbeaten and following a knockout competition they beat one Newton Heath in the final to get there place in the top division. However a disapponting second season saw them bottom of the league and lose the knockout competition to be relegated. A tough fighting spirit at the club though saw them promoted back again the following season. They stayed in the top division for eight years and in season 1900-01 Liverpool won the first of their championships. Two seasons earlier Liverpool had ridded themselves of their blue and white quartered shirts in favour of the now famous red shirts.

The end of the 1903-04 season saw the reds relegated only to return straight away following a championship win again from Division 2 and Liverpool followed this by winning the first division in 1905-06.
